Osaka Metropolitan University has developed a chemical screening system. This helps identify substances that act directly on activated hepatic stellate cells that maintain liver balance. Using this system, Lawsone was found to inhibit the activation of hepatic stellate cells. In a study on mice, it was found that liver fibrosis was reduced.
Controls liver fibrosis
The study was published in the Journal of Biomedicine and Pharmacotherapy. This study identified upregulated cytoglobin associated with antioxidant functions in hepatic stellate cells. This means that these cells are becoming normal cells. Scientists believe that liver fibrosis can be controlled if medicines are prepared from henna.
Scientists say that they are developing a drug delivery system that can activate hepatic stellate cells and transport drugs. They plan to make it available to patients with liver fibrosis, said Dr. Atsuko Daikoku of the Graduate School of Medicine at Osaka Metropolitan University.
