DRI’s major operation, seizure of cocaine worth Rs 47 crore at Mumbai airport; 5 persons including woman arrested

Mumbai : Mumbai, which is the financial capital of the country and has the highest international traffic, is also prone to illegal activities and smuggling. Often this smuggling is caught by the police. In addition, illegal gold, valuables and drugs, cocaine are smuggled at (MumbaI) Mumbai Airport as well. Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) Mumbai zonal unit has seized cocaine worth 47 crores in a major operation against drug trafficking. Around 4.7 kg of cocaine has been seized from a female passenger at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). The price of this cocaine in the international market is approximately Rs 47 crore.

Based on specific intelligence, DRI officials stopped a female passenger from Colombo at the airport. A search of her luggage revealed a white substance hidden in nine packets of coffee powder. Tested with NDPS field test kit, it was found to be cocaine. Immediately following this operation, a further trap was laid and the person who was the intended recipient of the cocaine was also arrested at the airport itself. During further investigation, three more persons involved in the smuggling chain who were involved in the financing, logistics, collection and distribution of these narcotics were also arrested. Hence, a total of five accused have been arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985 in this case. Police are conducting further investigations.
