His film journey started from Bengali cinema. Bengali film director Devaki Bose saw his acting in a play and was impressed and gave him the lead role in his film ‘Alaknanda’ (1947). The film was not a big hit at the box office, but Pradeep Kumar’s acting and his screen presence were successful in attracting the attention of the audience and filmmakers. After this he worked in many Bengali films, which included films like ‘Bhooli Naay’ and ‘Swami’.

After Bengali films, he turned towards Hindi cinema. In the year 1952, Pradeep Kumar played an important role in the film ‘Anand Math’. After this, he played the lead role in the film ‘Anarkali’ with Bina Rai in 1953 and in ‘Nagin’ with Vyjayanthimala in 1954. These films gave him recognition on the big screen.
