Why was there a strike in Bollywood?,

There came a time in the year 1986, when the Maharashtra government had imposed heavy tax on movie tickets. Seeing this happening, many stalwarts of the entertainment world considered it an injustice to the public and took to the streets, which included stars like Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Rajesh Khanna, Hema Malini, Javed Akhtar, Shabana Azmi, and Randhir Kapoor.

200 shooting of films was stopped

Due to the strike, the entire entertainment industry had to suffer huge losses and the shooting of about 200 films was stopped. One and a half lakh workers had become unemployed and the studios were deserted. At that time this news had spread to foreign countries. A committee of actors was formed to calm the matter. When pressure increased, the government relented and reduced the tax from Rs 15 crore to Rs 5 crore. The strike ended, but the loss was heavy. The industry showed solidarity and a grand charity show named ‘Hope 86’ was organized. In this, the stars raised money to help the workers, although not everyone was happy. Some artists suffered more losses due to the strike. It is said that this increased the rift among the stars.
