Silver and gold Jewelry : Why silver items turn black? Why is there no such effect on gold?

Have you ever seen your home silver pooja plate or other items, after few months they turn a little black. At the same time, a gold ring or necklace will shine with the same luster for years.

This difference depends not only on the difference in color or price but also on the chemical nature of the metals. In fact, silver attracts sulfur compounds in the air.

This is mainly due to the presence of hydrogen sulphide gas in the air. When this gas hits the silver surface, a chemical reaction occurs to form silver sulfide (Ag₂S). This layer slowly turns the silver black.

This process is called tarnishing, which means the formation of a chemical layer on the silver, which dulls its luster. Surprisingly, this gas is released from common things around us, such as pollution, dust, rubber, perfume, detergents, even sweat contains some amount of sulfur.

Therefore, silver that is used more quickly turns black. But items placed in beer will be affected a little later.

Gold is the most chemically stable metal. That means it rarely or almost never reacts with gas or oxygen.

Oxygen, moisture or sulfur in the air does not affect it much. This is why no sulphide or oxide forms on gold, allowing it to retain its luster and color for years.
