Artificial Rain in Delhi: A historic decision by the government to reduce severe air pollution in Delhi on Tuesday October 28, 2025 was the first ever Megha Mathanam experiment in Delhi. They are trying to make artificial rains in the city through this experiment. According to the officials, if the weather conditions are favourable, rains may come soon.
The experiment is a key effort by the Delhi government to control the pollution clouds that form in Delhi after Diwali and to deal with the worsening air pollution during winters. “Depending on the current weather and cloud conditions, rains may occur soon,” officials said.
What is cloud seeding?
Cloud seeding is a climate modification technique. Clouds are made to rain by technically churning i.e. silver iodide. There should be a suitable environment for this process. There should be thick clouds. If conditions are favourable, artificial rains are expected to fall in a few hours or days and provide temporary relief to Delhi’s pollution problem.

Flight from Kanpur, trial at Burari
The aircraft used for the launch took off from Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday morning. It moved into the Burari area of north-west Delhi, where the launch took place. First the flight was delayed due to low visibility at Kanpur. But the take-off took off after the weather improved, officials said.

After Diwali festival, air pollution in Delhi is getting worse. It is likely to increase further during the winter season. It is for this reason that the Delhi government has undertaken this experiment. Pollution and smog are binding the city of Delhi. These artificial rains can reduce air pollution to some extent and provide relief to the citizens.

If the experiment is successful, the officials expressed hope that cloud seeding can be implemented regularly in Delhi. The Delhi government is strengthening its fight against environmental issues through these measures. Citizens are advised to take precautionary measures like wearing masks and staying at home.
