8th Pay Commission: Good news for nearly one crore central government employees and pensioners. The central government on Tuesday approved the formal constitution of the eighth pay commission. NC-GCM (Staff Side) Secretary Siva Gopal Mishra said there may be a delay in the implementation of the Eighth Pay Commission, but it will come into effect from January 1, 2026. That means, in case of delay, the dues can be paid to the staff from January 1, 2026 onwards.
Big news for over 10 million central government employees and pensioners. The central government on Tuesday formally approved the constitution of the eighth pay commission. Former Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai will be the chairperson of the commission, while IIM Bangalore professor Pulak Ghosh and Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) secretary Pankaj Jain have been appointed as members.
18 months to send recommendations
The commission will submit its recommendations to the government in the next 18 months, after which salary and pension hikes can be implemented from 2027. A press note issued after the Cabinet meeting said that the norms for the Eighth Pay Commission have been approved. The Pay Commission consists of Chairman, Member (Part-time) and Member Secretary. Eighteen months from the formation of the Wage Commission to submit its recommendations.
NC-JCM (Staff Side) Secretary Shiv Gopal Mishra says that while there may be a delay in the implementation of the 8th Pay Commission, it will come into force from January 1, 2026. If this means delay, then the dues can be added to the staff from January 1, 2026.

Salary hike with arrears in 2027!
Earlier, when the Seventh Pay Commission was implemented, there was a delay. Dues have been paid to all employees and pensioners. The NC-GCM, a forum representing central government employees and pensioners, submitted a set of rules to the central government in January.
It should be noted that in view of rising inflation in the country and other factors, every 10 years a new Pay Commission is constituted to revise the salaries, allowances and other benefits of the Central Government employees. Accordingly, the Eighth Pay Commission will come into effect from January 1, 2006.
The Eighth Pay Commission was announced in January this year, but it took nearly 10 months to get approval from the Union Cabinet. This delay has led to voices of discontent among government employees and their communities.
