Cyclone ‘Montha’ has wreaked havoc in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Tamil Nadu. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi took stock of the preparations while reviewing the situation. The storm brought strong winds of up to 110 kmph and incessant rain, which uprooted trees and disrupted power supply in many areas.
A woman died while 2 others were seriously injured and hospitalized after a tree fell during the storm in Aluri district. Disaster management teams have been deployed to remove fallen trees and restore power to the affected areas.
The severe cyclonic storm, which had been moving northwestward since Monday, weakened slightly after crossing the coast. However, due to this, heavy rainfall is expected in South India. Tamil Nadu is likely to receive moderate to heavy rains for the next six days due to the influence of Montha, the IMD said.
In a weather bulletin issued this morning, the Meteorological Department has warned that gusty winds of 45 to 55 kmph, gusting to 65 kmph, may occur over the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kanyakumari Sea. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea until conditions improve.
Emergency control room on alert
Chennai is expected to remain mostly cloudy with intermittent light to moderate rain over some areas. The Greater Chennai Corporation and the Tamil Nadu Disaster Management Authority have put all emergency control rooms on alert to handle possible rain-related incidents. Tamil Nadu officials have also directed local administrations to closely monitor water levels in rivers and reservoirs and ensure preventive measures are taken in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
Anganwadi center closed from school onwards
The impact of Cyclone ‘Montha’ is clearly visible in Odisha. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has started more than 2000 relief centers in 8 districts of southern areas. The state government has ordered closure of schools and Anganwadi centers in 9 districts till October 30. Entry to Devamali and Mahendragiri hills is prohibited for tourists. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea till October 29.
