Kane Williamson: Kane Williamson, known as New Zealand’s restrained captain, has finally announced his retirement from T20 international cricket. The 35-year-old Williamson has ended his illustrious career in the format, saying it was the right decision for him and the team. However, he will still play for New Zealand in ODI and Test cricket, and continue his journey in T20 franchise cricket.
Kane Williamson’s T20 journey
Williamson, who made his T20 international debut in 2011, has played a total of 93 matches, scoring 2575 runs at an average of 33.. He has 18 half-centuries in this run, while his highest score is 95. He retired as New Zealand’s second highest T20I run-scorer.
A successful captaincy career
Williamson led the Blackcaps in 75 T20Is. Under his captaincy, New Zealand reached the T20 World Cup semi-finals twice (2016 and 2022) and reached the final in 2021. Although the team lost in the final, Williamson’s stunning knock of 85 in that match is still considered one of the best in New Zealand’s T20 history.
Reason for retirement and future goals
On his decision to retire, Williamson said, “It felt like the right time for me and the team to exit the T20 format. This will give the team a clear direction for future series and the next World Cup.” He is now gearing up for the three-Test series against the West Indies, which starts on December 2 in Christchurch.
New Zealand Cricket’s reaction
New Zealand Cricket CEO Scott Weinink expressed his respect for Williamson’s decision and praised him. According to him, “Williamson’s leadership and consistent runs have been unparalleled. He has left the T20 team in a strong position. He has earned the right to decide how to end his illustrious career with his performance.” Weinink also mentioned that Williamson will be known as a true legend of New Zealand cricket after his full retirement.
